B.Sc., Bio Chemistry

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

  • The department of Biochemistry was established in the year 2006 with 10 students. Bachelor of Science (B. Sc) in biochemistry is full time three year undergraduate degree course offered by the Bharathidasan University, Thiruchirapalli. A candidate passed in the higher secondary examination or appearing in higher secondary examination in current academic year with physics, chemistry and mathematics or Biology as major subject in science stream from any recognized board is eligible to join the course.
  • The department of Biotechnology which offers Sc Biochemistry programmes was started with an intake of 40 students in the under – graduate level. Currently the combined program has 42 students with 3 dedicated and qualified faculty members assisted by 2 technical staff members.
  • We have placed our students in different position in different organizations.
  • The department is well-equipped with modern laboratories to provide quality teaching and research opportunities for students. The Department has the facilities like UV-Visible Spectrophotometer, Laminar Air flow chamber, Cooling Centrifuge, Autoclave, Light microscope, Water Bath, Orbital Shaker Incubator, Bacteriological Incubator, UV-Trans-illuminator, Hot Air Oven, Refrigerator, pH meter, Dry Bath, Weighing balance, Magnetic stirrer, Vortex and Gel electrophoresis apparatus etc.

Vision

  • To provide quality education to the students by imparting in-depth knowledge of Biochemistry, facilitating research activities and cater to the ever changing industrial demand & societal needs.

Mission

  • To provide the learning platform which helps the students to enhance problem solving skills and offering solid theoretical & practical foundation in various discipline of Biochemistry
  • To provide exposure to students by using modern technological tools in the area of Biochemistry.
  • To provide research based projects activities in the recent trends of Biochemistry.
  • To create an ability to the students to apply an in-depth knowledge in theory & practical in the disciple of Biochemistry towards the benefit of the society

OBJECTIVES OF DEPARTMENT:

By the end of the course, students should be able to:

  1. The learning outcomes are designed to help learners understand the objectives of studying B.Sc.Biochemistry that is, to analyze, appreciate, understand the basic concepts of chemical reactions that occur in living systems, which enable them to understand the various perspectives of applied sciences that benefit the mankind
  2. Provide students with learning experiences that help instill deep interests in learning biochemistry; develop broad and balanced knowledge and understanding of Biomolecules, key biochemical concepts, principles and theories related to biochemistry; and

3.Expose the students to a wide range of careers that combine biology, plants and medicine.  provide students with some work experience, for example a summer internship or a research project in a research laboratory to further boost the career prospects.

  1. Develop in students the ability to apply the knowledge and skills they have acquired to the solution of specific theoretical and applied problems in biochemistry, provide students with the knowledge and skill base that would enable them to undertake further studies in biochemistry and related areas or in multidisciplinary areas that involve biochemistry.

BIOCHEMISTRY LEARNING OUTCOMES:

  • Understand the principles of various fields of chemistry and biology (organic chemistry, analytical chemistry, biochemistry, genetics, metabolism, and molecular biology)
  • Develop as independent thinkers who are responsible for their own learning
  • Develop transferable quantitative skills
  • Be able to work with others demonstrating leadership and collaborative skills
  • Apply modern instrumentation theory and practice to biochemical problems
  • Recognize potential laboratory safety concerns and address them using appropriate techniques
  • Present the results, conclusions, and relevance of scientific experiments to a specific audience
  • They will gain the hands on knowledge of various techniques useful in biochemistry which can help them to stand with a skilful job at various industries and research labs.
